Observations: -
[In this Madrasa too the teacher (Mumtaz) wanted to conduct Speaking Skill Test for the entire class hour but she was not allowed to do so as the observation was meant for testing the teacher’s teaching skills & not the pupils’ Speaking Skills. However, the visitor didn’t want to discourage the students who came prepared for the talk, so she allowed 4 pupils’ out of 47 to give their presentations].
The class got started and the commentary is as follows:-

Student 1 speaks for 1 min “EDUCATION” is the topic.
Appropriateness & content was satisfactory but mugged up. Her accent & pronunciation was average. Encouragement & support can make her awesome speaker.

Student 2 speaks for 1 min “EDUCATION” is the topic.
In audible –-insufficient content--- low confidence. Needs tremendous support to improve overall.

Student 3 speaks for 1 min “FRIENDS” is the topic.
Mugged up the content. Was not confident. Needs a lot of support to build up confidence & become an active learner.

[The teacher conducts the class].

T Teaches Grammar. Present Tense is the structure she takes up.
She writes on the board “I write a letter in English”.And then writes the following subject pronouns on the board:-

I
You
We
They
Write
He
She
It
My Mother
Writes

The Teacher goes on to explain in one breath all the different structures of the present tense i.e.

  1. Present Indefinite
  2. Present  Continuous
  3. Present Perfect
  4. Present Perfect Continuous

The examples written on the board all at a time are as follows:-

Present Continuous
She is writing a letter for me
Present Perfect
I have completed her work.
She has gone to market.
My father has bought a car.
Present Perfect Continuous:-
I have been writing a letter since morning.
These examples are a thorough confusion for the pupils because the teacher has written all the four structures together without giving them time to concentrate well on each structure. The teacher should have taken one structure at a time and given and elicited a no. of examples.

Action plan:-

  1. When your pupils make an oral presentation, make it a point to evaluate their work and monitor their talk.
  2. Give your comments & appreciation.
  3. Through demonstration train them how to deliver a talk.
  4. Be extra careful when you are teaching grammar. You must know your objectives well.
  5. Present one grammar i.e. one structure at a time and then move onto the other when they are thorough with one.
  6. Elicit a number of examples to make sure they have followed the rules and can use the structure confidently.
  7. Always keep it in mind to check their accent & pronunciation. It should be an ongoing process.
  8. Don’t rush through your tasks in your class.
  9. Have your pupils do a great deal of written work every day. For example writing a No. of example sentences using the structure taught.
  10. Be up to date with the corrections of your pupils’ written work.
  11. You can have the best pupil in your class assist you in executing the action plan.
  12. Always go to the class with a lesson plan prepared the previous day.
  13. Always try to contextualize your examples.
